How to Choose a Hat
"If the hat fits, wear it!"
Whether or not you like wearing hats, they are a more or less essential accessory in anyone's wardrobe, as they provide excellent protection from the elements, rain or shine. Many people have trouble choosing a hat they feel comfortable wearing or are simply unsure what styles are available and what suits them. If this sounds like you, read on! We've put together some tips to help you choose the perfect hat from our Kooringal Hats range.
Find the Right Size
Measure the circumference of your head around the widest part, just above the level of the ears, across the forehead and around the back of the skull. This is where the internal sweatband of the hat will sit. Then compare with this table:
|S 44cm||S 51cm||One Size - 57cm||S 59cm||S 57cm|
|L 48cm||L 55cm||Most are adjustable||L 61cm||L 59cm|
If you find that you are between sizes, consider using a Hat Sizer to achieve a better fit. Hat Sizers are adhesive felt strips that stick to the inside of the sweatband to reduce the circumference and make a hat fit more snugly. For example, if your head measurement is 58cm, you could use a hat sizer inside a 59cm hat to bring it down to your size.
Often when people think about hats, the first image that springs to mind is the classic baseball cap. If that's not your thing, there are many more options out there!
Not sure what style suits you? Here's some tips:
Fedoras: These have a distinctive shape with a small brim, turned up at the back and flat in the front. They are as much a fashion accessory as they are sun protection, which makes them extremely versatile for everyday wear. You can dress them up or down depending on the occasion, making them a popular choice for outdoor functions. Most people find that even if they don't generally suit hats, they look good in a fedora.
Buckets: Usually made of soft canvas or fabric, this style is a popular choice for outdoor activities such as fishing or hiking, or for children at school/daycare. They can be folded up and packed into a bag with ease, and usually come with a chin strap to prevent the hat from blowing off in the wind. With a medium-sized brim, they provide sun protection for the back of the neck and ears as well as shielding the face.
Caps: Casual styles with a peak to protect the forehead and an adjustable strap at the back. They are small and easy to throw in a back or glove box, and are a popular choice for sports. However, they do not provide protection for the back of the neck.
Visors: These can be either push on (with arms that sit above the ears like glasses) or with a strap that fastens at the back of the head. They have a wide peak at the front that shades the whole face. The advantage of this style is that it won't give you "hat hair"; it's great if you don't want to interfere with your hairstyle or if you find uncomfortable to cover your whole head.
Wide Brims: Stylish and elegant, these provide the ultimate sun protection while also looking beautiful. Some wide brims have a wire that allows you to bend the brim shape however you like, others have a softer brim that drapes slightly over your neck and shoulders.
Mid Brims: If you want all-round sun protection but find wide brims a little too much, this is the style for you. They come in rounded bucket-style shapes, or in a more angular shape similar to fedoras.
Drovers: The classic "panama hat" with a wide, stiff brim. These are a popular choice for men who want a stylish hat that offers greater protection than a fedora. They come in a variety of different weight materials, from straw to canvas to leather, and some have a chin strap to keep the hat securely on the head. Certain styles also have mesh "vents" to help keep the head cool.
